Container weight regulation

4/11/16

Effective July 1st 2016, a new container weight regulation will be implemented by International Maritime Organisation (IMO). Any shipping container leaving from any port in the world must be accompanied by a shipping document signed either electronically or in hard copy by the shipper on the bill of lading listing the verified gross mass of a container in order to be loaded onto a ship.

The weighing must be done in one of two approved ways:

  • The container is stuffed and weighted on a weightbrige to get the VGM.
  • All components in the container are weighed separately, including pallets, packing and lashing materials. The container tare is added to the sum of the individual components weights to get VGM.
